On 18th June, 2013, experts from universities and specialist companies presented their results within the framework of the second status report from ExxonMobil, on the implementation of hydrofracking risk assessment.

Below is an outline of the main points covered at this meeting:

  • Prof. Dr. Hou, Technische Universität, Clausthal, discussed the dissemination of frack-fluids in the underground, using the location Bötersen Z11 in Lower Saxony as an example. The numeric modeling results suggest a good barrier for salt and anhydrite. The dissemination of frack-fluid depends more upon the viscosity of the frack-fluid and less upon injection volume.
  • Representatives of Schlumberger gave an overview of their eco-toxicological assessment of frack-fluids. The additives friction reducer, clay stabilizer and fracture propping agent are now being further developed in a more sustainable manner.
  • Dr. Weichgrebe, Wilhelm Leibniz Universität, Hannover, presented on process engineering for the treatment of flowback waters. Additionally, the possibility of balancing frack-additives in flowback waters was discussed.
  • Along with others from the engineering community, Dr. Schmidt, introduced a concept for monitoring groundwater.

The next public conference is planned for the end of 2013.
